THE GRACIOUS GYPSY
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy was a rugged off-road vehicle produced by Maruti Suzuki, known for its durability and versatility. It's popular among adventure enthusiasts, for its capability to navigate tough terrain. While it lacks modern features, its simplicity and ease of maintenance make it a favorite choice for off-road enthusiasts and in rural area. It was being built at the Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon, plant since 1985. It was primarily built as an off-road vehicle and all models were built with selectable 4WD. It was extremely popular with Indian Armed Forces and Police & Law enforcement in India. The Gypsy was exported to countries like Chile and Kenya. Within Europe, it is most often found in Malta. In contrast to Suzuki Jimny, the Gypsy is available either with four bucket seats or rear bench seats and a sizable trunk. Previously, the Gypsy was available as a "soft top", "hard top" and as an "ambulance car". In India, it is widely used by the police and military forces. In fact, It is now the mainstay of the Indian Army.
For civilian use, the Gypsy is a popular choice as a low-cost SUV and is a common sight at rally and autocross events. Unlike other Maruti vehicles, the Gypsy always wore the Maruti badge instead of a Suzuki badge. But in 2019, It's production collapsed due to the failure in regulating the new emission norms. Also because of the falling sales rates in the civilian sector. Atlast the company concluded to bring this product to an end. So, the production of the Maruti Gypsy for civilians stopped in March 2019. However Gypsy is still in production for defence. Bookings from civilians were taken till December 2018 and were delivered by March 2019.
Today, Gypsy may have came aside from the Indian roads, Still it continues to thrive in tough terrains till date. It is gone but not forgotten.
